The monograph presents the results of scientific research and technological developments in the field of surface modification by forming ion-plasma coatings. It is shown that during the deposition of condensate films from ion-plasma flows under non-equilibrium conditions, new structural states are realized in the coatings, which provide high mechanical and thermal properties of substrate-functional coating composites. Data on the formation of ion-plasma coatings of various compositions, structures, and architectures are presented, as well as new information on the material science principles of adjusting the phase composition, structure, substructure, and stress state of coatings to ensure their unique functional properties. The peculiarities of the use of coatings in cutting tools, in particular those equipped with polycrystalline superhard materials based on cubic boron nitride, are considered.
