The twelfth volume of the History of Ukrainian Literature covers the literary process from Ukraine’s independence in 1991, which symbolically marks the beginning of a new Ukrainian literature whose authors rejected socialist realism and upheld the principle of creative freedom to the present day. Unlike the previous volumes, the 12th<\/sup>\u00a0volume deals with contemporary literature, which is characterised by fluid assessments, an unformed canon, or even multiple canons, as it makes sense to discuss separate canons for fiction, documentary writing, \u201chigh\u201d literature, and genre literature. The material is organised according to the principle of genre, and the volume presents three genres of high literature: poetry, prose, and drama. The review articles are supplemented by portraits of authors whose work has had the greatest impact on the development of Ukrainian literature after 1991. The publication traces the development of genre literature, provides an overview of the essay genre, and is supplemented by thematic sections that cover the literature of the Maidan (Revolution of Dignity), poetry from the Russian-Ukrainian war, and military prose and drama.<\/p>\n

Considering that the 12th volume deals with an unfinished literary process, it does not always follow a strict academic style \u2014 the articles contain discussion theses and original interpretations, but the authors and editor of the volume took care to ensure that the chapters are informative and that the facts, quotations, names, titles, and dates are accurate.<\/p>\n
