The work describes the status of 443 bird species that occurred or occur on the territory of Ukraine since the second third of the 19th century. In addition, the taxonomic list was supplemented with 370 subspecies recorded in the country during this period, that gives a detailed idea of the connections of the Ukrainian region with neighboring and much more distant areas of distribution of bird species. One of the species, which was previously included in our fauna, is proposed to be excluded due to unsuccessful introduction of it. With regard to the species of the Red Data Book of Ukraine, an estimate of their relative abundance is given. In some cases, the population is also estimated for other species, mostly non-numerous and migratory ones. The work contains an explanation of the choice of the Ukrainian names for certain bird species, regarding which discussions may arise. It contains not only Latin, and also English names of species from the Internet page of the International Union of Ornithologists. Native names are proposed for all nonnominative subspecies.
This book can be useful both for professional researchers studying fauna and amateur nature lovers interested in its composition. To some extent, it can be used as a manual for translating foreign texts on ornithological topics into Ukrainian.
